About Yumi Janairo Roth
Yumi Janairo Roth’s research-based practice includes projects built around social engagement and site-specific installation. As a featured artist in BMoCA’s current agriCULTURE exhibition, Roth explores how agriculture impacts immigrant communities. Her mother, Shirley Janairo Roth, emigrated from the Philippines to Washington D.C. in the 1960s and became a restaurateur. Due to the inaccessibility of Filipino produce, she uses substitutions, leading Roth to question: “what would it mean to give my mother access to vegetables that are central to her cooking?”
For the exhibition, Roth collaborated with Mark DeRespinis of Esoterra Culinary Garden to grow kangkong, a Filipino staple. Through the construction of a Filipino market-like food cart, Roth has made it possible for her mother to serve the kangkong grown by DeRespinis to the public. BMoCA has been gratified to work with Yumi, Shirely and Esoterra Culinary Garden as part of agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land and are thrilled to experience the product of their collaboration at Afield.

About BMoCA’s Art Education Programs
BMoCA’s education programs use art as a vehicle for fostering creativity, life-long learning, self-expression, and community. Our seven arts education programs serve over 8,000 people annually at the museum, in schools, libraries, and retirement communities across the Denver-metro area. These free programs expand access to all the benefits and joys of learning through artistic expression, provide opportunities for participants to meet and work with local artists, and bring BMoCA’s exhibitions beyond the four walls of the museum, to underserved audiences throughout the region.
Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, Frasier Retirement Community and Supporting Sponsor, Studio B Architecture + Interiors for supporting BMoCA’s Arts Education Programs.
