Explore the intersection between art and sports in the heart of Boulder. Summer Games is a series of free outdoor events for all ages and abilities and features artists, games, food trucks, and local breweries.
Summer Games will include a large-scale Ping-Pong tournament, trivia, yoga, a volleyball-dodgeball mash-up, and lawn sports with curated soundtracks; as well as BMoCA’s popular Art Stop, art-making for youth and families on the museum’s front porch; free screen-printing workshops inside the museum; music; and artist interventions. BMoCA will extend its gallery hours to provide visitors with additional opportunities to explore the artworks on view, and waive admission fees.
Presented alongside BMoCA’s exhibition Game Changer, Summer Games builds on the expanding body of academic scholarship and contemporary artistic work considering the societal constructions of race, gender, age, and sexuality that are revealed within the alternative realities created in game structures. Summer Games, following in the tradition of artists like Gabriel Orozco and Gustavo Artigas, is an active intervention led by artists that demystifies and deconstructs the accepted rules and boundaries of organized sports, exposing the hierarchies protected within the games arena. In the Summer Games, Ping-Pong and trivia intersect to become one game, both intellectual and athletic. A sacred yoga series will be interrupted with artist-designed poses, at times impossible, other times comedic. In the Summer Games finale, the boundaries of high school gym sports and lawn sports collide and enmesh to create new spaces with our own invented realities.
Created in partnership with the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department, Newton Running Shoes, Ecovessel, Gaiam, Inc., and Blackbelly Catering.
