Carly Elizabeth Owens is a contemporary hand embroidery artist and designer. She received her BAD in Art + Design (Fashion and Fibers Studies concentration) with a minor in Arts Entrepreneurship from North Carolina State University (2017). She has previously studied Jacobean crewelwork and goldwork hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework in the United Kingdom, couture tambour beading with London based embroidery atelier, Hand & Lock, and garment pattern making at the Asheville School for the Apparel Arts in Asheville, NC. Additionally, Owens worked as a couture embroidery intern for the New York City based fashion label, Marchesa, and was a finalist for the 2017 Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery. Her current location is Erie, CO where she runs her embroidery studio.
Owens’ meticulously crafted embroideries are created using traditionally rooted hand stitching techniques in a modern context. The majority of her work is a combination of hand embroidered jewelry/wearables and textile art pieces. Color, texture and the implementation of fine craft are at the core of her practice.
