In his elaborately constructed, colorful photographs, Jason DeMarte explores the unsettling intersection between the natural world and consumer culture. His compositions challenge romantic notions of nature by juxtaposing flora and fauna with brightly colored plastics, mysterious oozing liquids, candy, and other unnatural elements.
DeMarte draws from historical references while simultaneously commenting on our modern day consumer culture’s desire for perfection. His work is inspired in part by The Hudson River School and early photographers such as Oscar Gustave Rejlander and Julia Margret Cameron, who also constructed photographs.
