agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land

June 8 – October 1, 2023

agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land, showcases new work created by 18 local and national artists in collaboration with Boulder County farmers in an effort to draw out parallels between art and agriculture. The intention behind commissioning artists to collaborate with farmers is to shed light on some of the diverse practices employed by farmers along Colorado’s Front Range, which inherently address issues from land rights to food access, to cultural heritage and climate change, among many others. Presented by BMoCA and the Longmont Museum, this multi-venue exhibition includes artwork on view at the two museums and site-specific installations at three local farms: the Agricultural Heritage Center in Longmont, the Boulder JCC Milk & Honey Farm, and Ollin Farms in Longmont.

The project presents an innovative way to address topical issues by integrating the perspectives and expertise of both artists and farmers. BMoCA features 8 artists whose work ranges from cartography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, as well as digital and analog media with subject matter drawn from personal histories, ancestral knowledge, science and technology. Collectively, the works on view, celebrate the region’s rich farming heritage while also sparking dialogue about challenges facing our local community and the world-at-large.

This exhibition aims to unfold a unique experience by intersecting art and agriculture in hopes to inspire visitors to think about their own connection with nature in new ways.

agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land was lead curated by Jaime Kopke in partnership with curators Jane Burke from BMoCA and Jared Thompson from Longmont Museum.
