Phyllis Bramson: When the Body Speaks its Mind
September 10 – October 31, 2004 @ BMoCA
When the Body Speaks its Mind featured Phyllis Bramson’s unique collage paintings, which are meditations about pleasure, trauma, and the difficulty of being. This new series of works on paper is created in Bramson’s signature narrative style using painted images, collage, and found materials and reveals themes and metaphors about love and affection in a hostile world.
The Chicago native’s work has been featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, D.C., and Printworks in Chicago. Bramson has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fellowship in Painting, an NEA Fellowship in Printmaking, and a John Simon Guggenhiem Grant.
“You can feel Bramson’s paintings in your throat, like the anticipation of something sweet.” — Margaret Hawkins, Chicago Sun Times
