Steel Powder Painting and Landscape

Kim Jongku’s BMoCA at Macky exhibition consisted of large-scale, steel-powder paintings created during a two month visiting artist residency at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Jongku is a trained sculptor whose interest in the material residue of the sculpting process has moved his practice away from conventional sculpture and towards work that exists between a variety of processes, from sculpture, installation, painting and performance to calligraphy. Since the late 1990s he has primarily worked with steel powder on raw canvas, a technique that Jongku invented. In his use of the steel powder, Jongku personally confronts loss, while representing the industrial enterprise that fueled the Korean economy in the 1980s. The work further explores the relationship between humans and the natural environments.

BMoCA at Macky is an off-site exhibition series presented in collaboration with Macky Auditorium Concert Hall, University of Colorado Boulder.
