HOVAB @ Macky: Shark’s Ink
September 1 – November 18, 2016
@ Macky
HOVAB @ Macky: Shark’s Ink highlighted original prints created by nine Boulder artists in collaboration with Master Printer Bud Shark of Shark’s Ink, the internationally-renowned print studio in Lyons, Colorado. The exhibition, the first to focus on Shark’s Ink prints created solely with artists from the Boulder area, included work by Suzanne Anker, Teresa Booth Brown, Matthew Christie, Evan Colbert, Luis Eades, Ana Maria Hernando, Jim Johnson, Barbara Takenaga, and Betty Woodman.
Bud Shark opened Shark’s Lithography Ltd in downtown Boulder in 1976, later relocating to Lyons as Shark’s Ink. Over the last 40 years, Shark’s Ink has printed and published an extensive and eclectic body of prints collaborating with over 160 artists from the United States and Europe.
Artists invited to create a print with Shark work across a wide variety of mediums, and each approaches the process in different ways. Some arrive with detailed maquettes or drawings, others with a suitcase of reference materials, and some with only an idea. In a true collaboration, the artists work closely with Shark to pursue a strong personal vision through unusual and inventive printmaking techniques. Throughout the process, artists stay at Shark’s as artists-in-residence, often for weeks at a time.
This exhibition was curated by Joan Markowitz and presented as part of Celebration! A History of the Visual Arts in Boulder (HOVAB), a community-wide cultural event that revisits the city of Boulder’s dynamic and diverse visual arts past through a series of exhibitions, film screenings, discussions, and more. Spanning 121 years of history, HOVAB will feature work by over 300 artists presented in venues across Boulder and Longmont from September 29, 2016 through January 15, 2017.
