Business of Murals 101 Workshop is a practical, behind-the-scenes seminar about the mural industry led by mural artist DETOUR.
Participants will explore the full mural process, from developing a personal style and translating designs onto large-scale surfaces to selecting materials, preparing walls, choosing equipment, managing timelines, and planning for maintenance. The workshop also covers the business side of mural work, including how to price projects, evaluate creative and logistical considerations, communicate with clients, and develop effective proposals for commissions and public art opportunities.
Through real-world mural case studies and drawing on more than a decade of experience creating large-scale public and private murals around the world, Detour will share insights into budgets, production timelines, creative freedom, client relationships, and the many different ways mural projects can take shape from concept to completion.
The session concludes with a dedicated Q&A for artists looking to strengthen their mural practice, refine their process, and pursue larger-scale opportunities.
Instructor Bio: DETOUR
Thomas Evans, a.k.a. DETOUR, is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in large-scale public art, interactive visuals, portraiture, immersive spaces, and creative direction. His work explores the intersection of art and innovation, blending traditional mediums with emerging technologies and collaborative approaches. A natural collaborator and self-described “military brat,” DETOUR draws from a wide range of experiences that shape his creative perspective. His ever-evolving practice spans visual art, music, and interactive technology, challenging conventional notions of creativity and expanding the boundaries of fine art.
