Virtual Studio Tour with Karen Breunig

Karen Breunig was born in Oceanside, New York. She studied at the Graduate School of Fine Arts at The Parsons School of Design, the Kansas City Art Institute and Boston College. Her awards include a Helena Rubinstein Foundation Grant, a Fine Arts Fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts, Banff, Canada, and the Jurors’ Award, “Arts 87,” Boulder Center for the Visual Arts, Boulder, Colorado. In 1986, she was commissioned to create a mural for the City of Denver’s Civic Center Festival and a mixed media assemblage for Amnesty International’s 25th Anniversary exhibition. Her work was included in the collections of Drexel Burnham Lambert, Incorporated, the City of Denver, Stephens, Incorporated, and numbers private collections. She currently maintains a studio in Boulder, Colorado.

Breunig’s work concerns itself with the fragmentary and fleeting nature of memory; the ephemeral quality of reality; and memory and perception, particularly around its relationship to storytelling. She is drawn to exploring how these stories shape a being’s lived experience and their memories and the circular nature of this process. Finally, her artistic exploration also examines the human body in relationship to others and the landscape, in both physical and emotional space. By combining mediums based on intuition, but not on thought, she feels the greatest connection to her process, which is fueled by her passion for color and a yearning to improve the next time. That she came close, but next time she can get closer.

Virtual Studio Tours are 30 min interactive programs that explore local contemporary artist studios. Artists take viewers behind the scenes of their studio practice with insights into their processes, inspirations and artwork. Moderated by BMoCA’s Associate Curator of Community Engagement this Instagram Live series is an initiative to support local artists and give viewers the opportunity to take a closer look at art practices and ask questions to contemporary artists.
