Sophia Okada Callahan was born and raised in the beach suburbs of Los Angeles. For college she attended Parsons The New School for Design where she majored in design and strategy. After school, she worked in trend research and forecasting for various global brands, while maintaining side projects such as VSOON, Good Earth NYC and Home Economics. After 11 years in New York, this last winter she moved to Boulder, Colorado.
Grounded in research that explores alternative histories, self mythologies and dreams, during this time, her work is primarily manifested through paintings, textiles and zines.
Sophia has participated in artist residencies with 856G Gallery in Cebu, Philippines, 2727 California Street in Berkeley, California, Ferland Studios in Eugene, Oregon, and the Prelinger Library in San Francisco, California. She has presented her work at institutions such as FIDM in Los Angeles, University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines, and Parsons the New School for Design in New York. Her work has been covered in various media outlets such as Vice, PSFK, LSN Global, WGSN, Protein Journal, Philippine Star, Perfectly Imperfect, and Zee Magazine.

Virtual Studio Tours are 30 min interactive programs that explore local contemporary artist studios. Artists take viewers behind the scenes of their studio practice with insights into their processes, inspirations and artwork. Moderated by BMoCA’s Associate Curator of Community Engagement this Instagram Live series is an initiative to support local artists and give viewers the opportunity to take a closer look at art practices and ask questions to contemporary artists.
