Explore the landscape of Bennett, Colorado, through an interactive topographic map and exploratory video game which will be created by artist Cherish Marquez as part of her exhibition, Topographic Memory. The virtual map will feature landmarks of the town and surrounding area, and stories from community members will be embedded in the game. The design of the topographic map will be made from recycled fabric, conductive material and an interface that will allow community members to move through a digital model of the community.
Participants at the workshop will help cut, shape and place together layers of the map which will create the control board that players will use to engage with the game. Participants are invited to share stories and memories of Bennett with Marquez, and she will include them in the game’s design as integral parts of the storyline and cultural landscape of the community.
About the artist
Cherish Marquez is a queer Latina and interdisciplinary artist with a focus on digital media. She combines the digital world with the physical world, often including handmade objects that act as interfaces to control the worlds she fabricates. Her work acts as the mediation between digital and physical spaces.
About the project
The Topographic Memory exhibition and associated workshops are part of BMoCA at Anythink Fall Artist Showcase, a partnership between BMoCA and Anythink. Through this initiative, BMoCA presents free, museum-quality exhibitions by regional artists at Anythink library branches and complementary programs at the libraries and neighboring schools. BMoCA at Anythink expands accessible educational and cultural opportunities for Adams County residents of all ages and backgrounds.
